TSWELELO began as a primary school in 1984, serving the educational needs of the Mohlakeng community for several decades. Over time, however, increasing pressure on nearby secondary schools led to overcrowding, creating an urgent need for expansion within the area.
In response to this challenge, discussions were initiated in 2023 involving school principals, School Governing Bodies (SGBs), parents, and community stakeholders. These engagements laid the foundation for a major transition—transforming TSWELELO from a primary school into a fully-fledged secondary school.
The transition began in 2024 with the introduction of Grade 8, while lower grades such as Grade R and Grade 1 were phased out. In 2025, Grade 9 was added, and the process of gradually closing the primary phase continued. By the end of 2025, all primary school educators had been reassigned to nearby primary schools, ensuring that learners and teachers were accommodated closer to their residential areas.
In 2026, TSWELELO officially entered a new chapter as a secondary school with the introduction of Grade 10. A new team of educators was appointed, alongside a leadership structure consisting of a principal, 1 deputy principal, and 1 departmental head. The principal transitioned from the former primary school, while additional leadership staff were sourced from other institutions. By the second term of 2026, all teaching staff had been formally appointed, strengthening the school’s foundation.
TSWELELO SECONDARY SCHOOL currently offers three academic streams at Grade 10 level:
* Science
* Commerce
* Humanities
The school is set to expand further, with Grade 11 planned for 2027 and Grade 12 in 2028, completing its transformation into a full secondary institution.
This transition has not been without challenges. The school has had to adapt within a context of limited resources and budget constraints, requiring resilience, innovation, and strong commitment from staff and leadership. Despite these challenges, the school continues to grow, rebuild, and establish its identity.
Today, TSWELELO SECONDARY SCHOOL stands as a symbol of progress and community-driven development—committed to providing quality education and shaping the future of its learners.
